Saphenability Ukraine

Ensuring healthy lives and promoting well-being — a powerful statement from the United Nations SDG No3 that, at first glance, might seem achievable for many in our surroundings. But the reality is far more harrowing for countless others. In conflict zones like Israel and Palestine, Ukraine and Russia, survival itself hangs by a thread. The question is no longer about living well, but about living at all. For many, the decision comes down to a brutal choice: amputation or death.

The number of amputations has skyrocketed dramatically in recent years, fueled by the relentless devastation of war. Precise figures are shrouded in secrecy, hidden away like so many other wartime strategies. But the truth is undeniable—we’re talking about tens, if not hundreds of thousands, of amputations on all sides.

At Saphenus, we cannot stand by and watch. We are compelled to act, drawing on the expertise we’ve gained from our development aid projects second leg in Tunisia.

Now, Saphenus is in Warsaw, just a stone’s throw from the Ukrainian border. In Poland’s capital, we have a crucial opportunity to forge new partnerships at the Rebuild Ukraine Conference from June 24-26, 2024. Our CEO, Rainer Schultheis, is on the ground, engaging with aid organizations to find practical solutions. How can we help swiftly, without being bogged down by bureaucracy? Will our efforts reach those who need them most? It’s become clear that the need is vast, with two main groups crying out for assistance: wounded soldiers and civilian victims.

**Restoration of human capital**—a phrase that leaps off the pages of the Rebuild Ukraine charter. It’s a term loaded with meaning, sparking a flood of thoughts. Strengthening human and social capital—is that what they truly mean? Or is it just another bureaucratic catchphrase? For us, it’s about something deeper: fostering this capital in the name of social sustainability, so that a better life can be possible for those who have lost so much.
